The Fountain
By Sarah Frank and Alan Mackie
Fiddle tune: Two Złoti Waltz by Alan Mackie
The fountain is tall
Like an old church hall
Pouring life from all sides
The fairest of brides
The blast of a cannon
A fluther of phantoms
My ears are abused
But all I hear is music
All I hear is music
Lena my love, we were up all night dancing
Then we went straight to church
Lena I think you've been up all night fretting
Please don't be hurt
I know you're feeling kinda frail
We've been running ‘round restlessly
The sky is clear and pale
Hanging effortlessly
So come float along
Lay your head and rest with me
Float to the fountain with me
Come float along
Lay your head and rest with me
Float to the fountain with me
The faces around me are calm
Solemn but still, stern but serene
We are resting in a pond
And the pond rests in between us
The pond rests in between

J'entendrai mieux
Le long regard de tes grands yeux
Ta lèvre rose, ô ma belle!
Adieu les daims, adieu les lièvres
Les rouges perdrix! Je veux
Baiser le lin de tes cheveux
Presser la pourpre de tes lèvres!

Silver Linings

Silver Linings
By Sarah Frank
The sun is playing shy behind the clouds
Something's got her hiding from the crowds
Heavy hanging, black as ash
Wincing with each lightning crash
Cover your ears, it's just too much
The weight of the world hangs in the sky
I'm sleepwalking to a crooked lullaby
The fog blurs the trees and suffocates the sea
Cover your eyes, it's just too much
There are silver linings, silver threads
From white clouds, white beds
Drapes that quiver through the room
A winding river, a sailing tune
Filling the cracks in our broken hearts
With the light of a new start
Tracing the tracks of our broken starts
To the light of a new heart
Don't look at me like this mother
I've been spat on by storm clouds one after the other
I'm hurting and I'm fragile
I'm trying to seem casual
Cover your heart, it's just too much
I'm beat as the bones in an old graveyard
Thought I had thick skin but I hadn't yet been scarred
Lines run down my face
Running away from grace, running for cover to feel safe
But my ears want to listen, my eyes want to see
My heart wants to feel what it's like to be free
Maybe the lines drawn on my face
Can draw me back to grace
Uncover your ears
Uncover your eyes
Uncover your heart

Train in the Night

Train in the Night
By Luke Fraser (SOCAN)
As the town sleeps sound in the cool of the night
A lonely streetlight shines on down
Through my window with the breeze in the pale moonlight
A faint whistle in the dark of the train coming ‘round
Silver are the rails curving through the town
When the moon shines off their backs
And the river’s refrain to the whistle sound
It’s a ripple on the water from the train coming ‘round
I can hear the train in the night like an old familiar song
For now everything is right, all my worries and all my wrongs
Like a mother’s touch it doesn’t take much to bring me back home again
I can hear the train in the night
I was talking to a friend just the other day
He said to keep these words in mind
“Keep your face always forth, towards the sun
And all the shadows will fall behind”
Sometimes I don’t know where I stand in life
In the darkness I lose my way
And when all seems lost in the endless night and I can’t trace a line
In a starless sky there’s a song that’s heard
A whistle cry, an amber morn, the breaking light
I can hear the train in the night
I can hear the train in the night
I can hear the train in the night
I can hear the train in the night
I have come so many miles and I will go so many more
At every turn I often ask, “what are we looking for?”
But under this old roof and under starry skies
The rails go ever on and I’ll be forever wondering why

Lone Journey
By Rosa Lee Watson and Doc Watson
God's given us years of happiness here
Now we must part
And as the angels come and call for you
The pangs of grief tug at my heart
Oh my darling, my darling
My heart breaks as you take
Your lone journey
Oh the days will be empty the nights so long
Without you my love
And as God calls for you I'm left alone
But we will meet in heaven above
Fond memories I'll keep of the happy days
That on earth we trod
And when I come we will walk hand in hand
As one in heaven in the family of God

Blankets

Blankets
By Sarah Frank
There's a house on the hill by a path ever winding
From the window sill a young mother is calling
She flicks the porch-light on saying supper is ready
Steaming like the smoke from the chimney
Come crawling from the bush, matted curls, grubby fingers
Knobbly knees that have stood in the face of many dangers
She's built a mighty fort with a blanket for a shield
The breath of a lilac and flowers of the field
'Soon as she was in to dine on milk and potatoes
I snatched up that blanket, ran as fast as the wind blows
A knot in my stomach, the blanket a sail
Hiding my guilt like a cotton veil
I reached my hollow of wood chips and acorns
The sweet smell of pine and of earth after rainstorms
Though she may cry tears of salty white
I sigh with relief to be warm tonight
As I lay me down for to sleep in the darkness
I hear a bird moan two notes of loneliness
She sings for her baby who's lost in the wild
I wonder if my own mother is singing for her child

Oh gather round me friends, and bend a nimble ear
Let’s have a song for her me boys, and one more pint of beer
For woman’s heart was made for minstrel hands alone
By other fingers played it yields not half the tone
Drink to her who long hath waked the poet’s sigh
The girl who gave to song what gold could never buy
A rich man tried to court her, he showered her with gold
And silver of the finest you ever did behold
But gold paled to sunlight, and silver to the moon
It did not touch her tender heart, it did not make her swoon
Then a song she heard upon the air, a melody so sweet
It played upon her heartstrings, it caused for her to weep
He said to you I wrote this song, and soon a thousand more
Of all the lads she could have had it’s him that she adored
The one who seeks a home where wealth and vainness shines
Is but a lonely soul in dark and gloomy pines
But oh the poet’s love can boast a brighter sphere
Its native home’s above though woman keeps it here

Wild Mountain Thyme
Scottish Traditional
O the summertime is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin' heather
Will you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin' heather
Will you go, lassie, go?
I will build my love a bower
By yon clear crystal fountain
And all around the bower
I’ll put flowers of the mountain
Will you go, lassie, go?
If my true love she won’t have me
I will surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin’ heather
Will you go, lassie, go?

When the curtains of night are pinned back by the stars
And the beautiful moon sweeps the sky
Dewdrops from heaven are kissing the rose
It's then that my memory flies
Wherever you go upon land or on sea
I'll share all your sorrows and cares
At night as I kneel by my bedside to pray
I'll remember you, love, in my prayers
Upon the wings of a beautiful dove
I'll hasten this message of cheer
And I'll bring you a kiss of affection and say
I'll remember you love in my prayers
The angels of heaven are guarding the good
As God has ordained them to do
In answer to prayers that I offer to Him
I know there's one waiting for you

Mint Condition

Mint Condition
By Caroline Spence
My favorite things are tired and worn
A dog-eared book with the cover torn,
But when I see you it’s like the very first day
There are some things you don’t want to fade
Still in mint condition, mint condition
Like when we were two kids just hopin’ and wishin’
That this life that we see ain’t no apparition
So we keep our love in mint condition
You can hide love away in a trunk or a box
You can throw out the keys once you lock all the locks
But some things will last and some things they won’t
But nothing about you ever gets old
Our bodies, they age, wrinkle, and tire
The feeling of comfort overtakes desire
I may have to learn to live here alone
But I’ll love you through ash or through stone
