In Nova Scotia, where I grew up, the folks are kind and friendly. You always get a pleasant “hello” when you meet someone on the street and if you only pause for a moment on the sidewalk, cars will happily stop and let you cross. Along with these pleasant “hellos,” there is an art to saying goodbye. It begins in the kitchen and moves towards the doorway... once through the door there is more joyous conversation and then goodbyes in the front yard, and perhaps, in my father's case, a few last goodbyes through someone's open car window.
